Ineos Energy Warns UK Windfall Tax Makes North Sea Investment Impossible
The UK windfall tax on North Sea oil and gas operators has made economics in the basin impossible for companies to invest, according to Brian Gilvary, the chairman of Ineos Energy. “In our initial strategy we wanted to expand in the UK, particularly gas. And what has happened is that the tax regime makes that impossible,” Gilvary told the Financial Times, commenting on the prospects of the oil and gas arm that UK-based chemicals group Ineos created four years ago. The Swedish sobriety secret: dry December – and off-licences shut on a Saturday night
For decades, the authorities in Sweden have encouraged people to drink responsibly – and with a state alcohol monopoly, strict rules and growing abstinence, they seem to be succeedingChristmas is synonymous with overindulgence, especially of drink. Sometimes the weather is an excuse: historically, alcohol was regarded as a way to warm up. Alcohol consumption traditionally increases in December in Europe and the US. Almost two-thirds of Britons say they intend to drink more at Christmas than they do at other times of the year, for example. In Sweden, however, Vit Jul (“White Christmas”) means “dry December”, a month when you don’t drink at all.Over the past 15 years, the concept of a Vit Monat (White Month) – and Vit Jul in particular – has grown in popularity in Sweden. Originally a charity idea like Sober October or Dry January, it originated as a twin project between Sweden and Finland. There is a real taboo against drink-driving.” Continue reading...

President-elect Trump’s return to the White House would likely mean less stringent environmental policies for the industry, “but we may see higher...

Listening - really listening - is the key to understanding others: Eric Foster
Be the example this season. Listen. Not with the goal of responding or changing that person’s mind. Listen with the goal to just understand. Listening is a radical act these days in a world that persistently pushes us apart. Through listening, we build bridges between shores. In a society where so many of us starve for understanding, perhaps it is the listeners that will save us all, writes Eric Foster in his column today.
